Did you guys think of maybe asking him directly? He may just want to be friends w/ both of you. I would find out soon because if you guys continue to like him, someone may get hurt. You don't want to do that if you're friends. Give it a shot. You have nothing to lose.

you could start noticing how he acts around both of you separately. does he go out of his way to help you or your friend? if you pay attention to how he acts around each of you, it'll be pretty obvious
