The door to a cabinet in my kitchen came off. There was basically a pivoting hook that the door was attached to, and the hook has a hole for a screw. It was screwed directly into the wood, which is made of plywood. The door came off, and the hole left behind is too big for the screw. I tried to use wood filler to fill the hole and then re-screw it, but it didn't hold up. Any suggestions?

Yes, go to Lowe's or a hardware store and get a 1/4" hardwood dowel rod. There are two kinds of dowel rods, hard and soft wood, you want the hardwood kind. You will also need a 1/4" brad point drill bit. A brad point is important, as it will make a very clean hole. And you will need some yellow wood glue, and some sandpaper and a saw. Drill out the old screw hloe with the 1/4" brad point drill bit. Cut the 1/4" dowel rod a bit over sized. Put some glue in the hole and on the dowel rod and put it in the hole. If you have to drive it in with a hammer thats ok. (this is not rocket science) You will need to put some pressure on the dowel rod till it dries. If you don't have a clamp, don't go out and buy one. you can use anything heavy, (like my x-wife) a brick, anything. Just put some wax paper over the dowel rod(keeps whatever you are using for weight from sticking to the door. When it dries sand it down, mark the new hole location, and your done. I hope this helps. You can use a bigger screw, but that wouldn't look so good. Break off pieces of round tooth picks to be as long as the hole is deep. Slip two or three into the hole. They don't have to be tightly packed as the screw will take up the slack. Before you put the screw in, put a drop or two of Loctite's Tighten Up as directed and then put the screw in.

I do not know the width of your cabinet, but you can get a wooden dowel rod (size appropriate to fill hole), drill a hole to fit the diameter of the dowel rod into where you need to put the screw, making sure to clean out excess wood debri, after dry fitting the dowel to assure fit, coat it with a small amount of wood glue, placing the dowel into the drilled hole allowing dry time, cut off excess dowel , sand edge flush with the cabinet, this will allow you to re-install the screw.

Break some toothpicks off in the hole, then reattach the screw.

If they weren't installed correctly, you should call the installer and have them correct this. Since they're external hinges and likely don't have adjusting screws, the fix would be to remove the hinge, fill in the hole with epoxy, and refit the hinge. Depending upon how much off it is, they may/may not need to refinish the cabinet.
