Because we think we are this body. We don't realize we are eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We fear death because of this and when someone dies it reminds us that that can happen to us. It's easier if someone gets sick and dies eventuallly. When there's a sudden loss of someone, it seems you get hit on the head by a 2 x 4.

Well my Mom died in her favorite chair I was bringing her a soda there she was dead.Was that a shock.It was sudden and unexpected.Its more of a shock that way then knowing people are sick and expected to die.
