It depends how much you know about him...kind of music..movies he likes.
Maybe you can get him a cd or dvd.
or maybe he is into a sport..try getting him something about the sport/team he likes.
You can make a homemade cake and go eat it at a park or something if you dont have much money to buy something for him.

A simple/not too mushy card that says you are thinking of him and a small box of candy. Something that you can give without expecting something back.

i've been thinking 'bout that too
and i still don't no what to get him! but you should try to find something he likes alot besides you and then try and get it for him or
you could just get ideas from him and just say you're getting it for his b-day
