Few people that I know of are able to see the beauty in the macabre, like in the gothic poems and classic horror stories from writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Dante and alike. I will grant that many like these stories due to there being classics however not many that I know of show any indication of the appreciation of the beauty of the dark and macabre art form.

Is this an accurate assessment?

What do you think that it means to see beauty in tales such as The Inferno, The Raven, and The Child in the Grave?

Can these stories teach our modern day society any lessons? And if so what?

Please explain your answers.

I thank you in advance for your insight.

Part of the beauty of these classics is the fact that it provides a strikingly honest insight to human nature. When books or stories have a happy ending, we cannot help but feel as though we're reading something unrealistic and it separates us from the work and the writer. With Edgar Allen Poe's stories, for instance, the readers can see genuine human reactions, not just the "right" decisions and judgment calls. It is the honesty that humans are not perfect that is beautiful.
