Earlier in the century, Norris had played on one of hockey's early powers, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, nicknamed the "Winged Wheelers." Because of the team’s location in Detroit, the Motor City, Norris transformed the MAAA logo into the first version of the Red Wings logo as we know it today.

When the AHL became a pro league in 1932, the then NHL president Frank Calder sent it into bankruptcy. One of the methods to do this was to bring the owner of the AHL Shamrocks into the NHL to buy the then struggling Detroit Falcons and join the teams together. When they merged, he changed the name to the Red Wings. He had a logo from an earlier team he played for called the Winged Wheelers. He felt since that logo had a tire and wings, and he would be in the "Motor City", it would be perfect. So the logo is a 1920's wheel and tire, with two wings. You can just see the wing in the rear atop the one in front.

Detroit is the Motor City, and last time I checked, all motor vehicles have wheels, hence the connection.
