Yes, your 40 time is slow for your weight. Here are some tips, and the best thing is, you are still growing.
1) Your diet. Purge your diet from all processed foods (i.e. partially hydrogenated oils) and high fructose corn syrup (found in soft drinks, junk juices, breads, etc.)
2) Use sandbags and run "lines" on the basketball court. Ask your coach to show you the proper ways to do this. Basically you start at one end of the court, run to the foul line, touch the line, back to the base line, touch, to half court, back, next foul line, back and then to the far base line and back. First time yourself without the sandbags, and then do them over and over everyday until your time running the lines is the same as when you first tested without the sandbags.
3) Run stairs. This is increase your lung capacity and strengthen your legs.
Do this and when football season comes around in August, your results?
You will be timed at 4.6 or better.
Rock on.
By the way, the poster above stating you will run the 40 in 4.3 obviously has never been timed in the 40. 4.3 is world class speed - that is near Olympic speed. Marcus Allen, who was fast, ran the 40 in 4.6, as did Emmit Smith.

No, you aren't right. It is 40 yards, and its called the 40 yard dash, not the 40 yard sprint, but its not done in full gear. If you've ever seen any highlights of a combine, the 40 is done in just clothes, usually a t-shirt and shorts or something, but there is no gear on, no padding, no jersey, its just tight clothing as to minimize drag and allow for the best time. As for why 40 yards was chosen, its probably because it's a short enough distance to where someone can go full sprint without slowing down at all, so fatigue or endurance isn't an issue, and its also long enough to actually be able to measure, since anything shorter would be too quick. Edit: Rob B, while you may be right that its a bad measure of football speed, since it's not done under "game conditions" you were a little off on the way its timed. At least, at the combines, the 40 times aren't done with stopwatches, they're VERY accurate. Theres a sensor set up at the beginning and end that capture your exact time. You are right that most are timed faster than gold medal sprinters, and there are 2 reasons for this. First of all, its a shorter distance, so you can maintain the burst speed for the whole distance much easier. The biggest reason is the way its timed. In the olympics there's a starting gun which you have to react to. You have to be careful not to go too early or you foul, so waiting for the gun makes you lose time. This is not the case in the 40. In the 40 you just get ready and go, and the time starts when you go and break the sensor. While it may not seem to be a lot, a half second when running times rounded to the tenth is huge.

Run sprints and find a hill and run up it. You are still real young. You don't reach your true full speed a lot of times until your twenties. Also a good 40 time is important, but there is more to football than that. Go out there and make plays

There is an old saying that 'you can't coach speed' which is very true. Now you are young and as your body matures and gets stronger you will naturally get a little faster on that 40 time but you are never going to be a 4.3 or even a 4.5 kind of guy.

Here is the deal...a 4.81 40 is not that bad...but if you want to get faster....find a hill that is fairly steep and run up AND down it as fast as you can....do this 2-3 times 3-4 times a week to start...then increase the reps over time....the important part is to run both up and down as fast as you can. The running up will increase your leg strength and the down hill will be training your muscles to move faster and that will help with your speed.

There are many reasons why. It could be your form. Do you run on the balls of your feet. It could be that your feet are not strong enough. Your body fat could be too high. You need to do some reasearch on athletic training and sports nutrition.
