Radiation is energy emitted from an object in the form of electromagnetic waves (e.g., light, "heat" (infra-red), radio, microwaves, x-rays, gamma rays) or particles. Most people when they think of radiation are thinking of atomic radiation such as that emitted by radioactive isotopes (uranium, plutonium, cesium, etc.).

Radiation that has enough energy to move atoms in a molecule around or cause them to vibrate, but not enough to remove electrons, is referred to as "non-ionizing radiation." If the radiation contains enough energy to remove electrons from atoms, it is referred to as "ionizing radiation".

Non-ionizing radiation would include things like light, "heat" radiated from a hot surface, and microwaves.

There are a number of different types of ionizing radiation, the most common being alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron. There are others as well.

Alpha radiation is essentially the nucleus of a helium atom, that is, two protons and two neutrons bound together and emitted at great speed.

Beta radiation is electrons, which are ionizing but have little penetrating power.

Gamma radiation is high-energy photons. This is the most dangerous form of radiation likely to be encountered by living things.

Finally, there is neutron radiation, where high-speed neutrons are emitted. Neutron radiation is common in cosmic rays and fast breeder reactors.

Radiation in physics is the process of emitting energy in the form of waves or particles. Various types of radiation may be distinguished, depending on the properties of the emitted energy/matter, the type of the emission source, properties and purposes of the emission, etc. When used by the general public, the word "radiation" commonly refers to non-ionizing radiation.

Radiation is anything that travels in rays, like light and heat.
Electromagnetic radiation is all wavelengths from radio waves , microwaves, visable light, ultraviolet, xray.
Sound travels in rays
Nuclear radiation includes alpha, beta and gamma.
