I would recommend buying the original (and only the original) first. As many folks have said, you should be able to find it discounted to somewhere around $20. Try it out, see how you like the game play.

Here's what you miss not having the expansion:

The ability to play the 2 new races, Blood Elf and Draenei. Not a big deal unless you have your heart set on one of those two races.

The ability to travel to Outlands and the ability to level past 60. Since you have to be level 58 to enter the Dark Portal to Outlands, neither of these will effect you for a good while.

The ability to take the Jewelcrafting trade skill. Jewelcrafting is a "crafting" skill instead of a "gathering" skill. Typical rule of thumb is gathering = make gold, crafting = lose gold. For a new player, gathering skills will let you build a bankroll the quickest way possible.

After you've played for a while, leveled some characters, or just have the itch for one of the new races, then go out and get The Burning Crusades expansion. Maybe the price will have come down by then as well :-)

Common sense, FTW!

Yes, you have to buy the World of Warcraft. You don't need Burning Crusade, but it is an add on pack that everyone is getting so once you decide whether you want to keep playing you should get it too. Good reviews of Wow and Burning Crusade are at Just Online Games, http://justonlinegames.blogspot.com/ , and you can find out what is in it there.

It's often best to buy WoW at the store, because online at Blizzard's website, it costs $40 to buy the game. However, at stores, the price is often now as low as $20, saving you a good amount of money. You have to buy the original because BC is an expansion pack. Also, if you buy it at a store, you get the CD's, meaning you don't have to download the game again if you switch computers, which is really useful, because a 6+ gigabyte game is a huge download, and even on high speed Internet, it could take awhile.

So my recommendation is to buy both WoW and Burning Crusade at the store. It's cheaper and more convenient in the long run. But remember, its an expansion pack so you have to have original installed. You CAN buy the expansion pack by itself, but be prepared to pay $20 more than if you had bought it at the store!

By the way, WoW rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

There's only 1 version of WoW, and that would be the original game. Burning Crusade is an expansion, so you need the original game if you want to play BC.

Sadly no, you must first purchase World of Warcraft before being able to purchase the Expansion Pack burning crusade. It is stated on the box. I highly recommend purchasing both if you have the funds, the new races are very fun to play!
