nothing against black people, I just think the name is ridiculous, it's too general. Does this mean a white guy from South Africa, or an Arab from Egypt who become US citizens called "African-Americans" too? Should white people be called European-Americans, and Hispanics called South/Central/North American-Americans? What if I see a black guy and call him an African-American and he is in fact an African-Canadian? Stupidest term ever, happy African-American History Month everyone

i wouldn't say it is a "stupid" term but i do agree that not everyone has the right to call themselves "african americans" because, quite frankly the color of your skin does not necessarily mean you have certain ancestors. there truly are "white" african americans as well as "black" african americans and others. but, the term is used to be PC and to generalize black people in america. I agree that this should not be the case, but what can you do other than speak your mind?

the whole thing about lineage not being able to be traced, i can see, but there are things you can trace back to have a general idea. just because you are "black" looking does not mean you're of african descent....my roommate looks as black as can be, but he is panamanian. go figure.

That's because most of black americans aren't really pure africans. they also look a bit diffrent from black africans.
By the way, don't you think the name "caucasian" is the most stupidest name ever created for white people?
Most of the caucasus people do not even look white, but that's other history.

Your right....its because American has a problem calling us just "American" so they had to create something to differentiate....I have always found it funny that a family can move here fro Germany for England and become a citizen and they are call an "American" my family has been here for so many generations that our great grand fathers pictures look nothing like us *wink* ......and still....................go figure.

Reading your answers I cannot but think of Farenheit 451, books started getting burned because they made people think and everyone had their feathers ruffled by someone elses opinion, so books were ditched and people watched the tv screen all day long until they were too numb to think for themselves. America was and still is a melting pot of cultures and races, it is only a politically correct way of referring to them. It does beat beaner, ****, greaser, yellowbelly and ****** all hollow. Whatever, you are all Americans that is what really matters.

I think its all idiotic and that includes things like Irish-American or Italian-American. If you want to be an American, then call yourself that but if you don't then go back to where it is you want to be.

I think African American is a little stupid. I mean white people didn't come from a place called "Cacasia". JK. I know that was really stupid. Perhaps Black-American would be a better name.
