I got my betta abt 10 days ago and it got ick about 4 days ago. I added aquarisol and extra salt to the bowl and finally today the ick started to stop getting worse. However, betta seems to be shredding its fin!! I can actually see pieces of his fin at the bottom of the bowl. And the middle of his fins is clearly thinned out. It seems different from the typical fin rot description. The thinned out part is white - there r no black/brown spots and holes/thinning are in the middle of the fin, not the end. Can someone shed some light pls?? Much appreciated

white fins are usually fins growing back -- maybe he had fin rot previously? more than likely he is just losing color from being sick. if he is shedding that is fin rot. i have never had fin rot that looked black or brown on a betta. their fins look like kind of wilted lettuce and drop off in bits like when you lose dead dry skin. i would try some antibiotics -- i use maracyn and maracyn2 in combination for fin rot. i think you can keep up the salt with the antibiotics. ich is hard to get rid of -- i keep bettas with ich in bowls w no gravel and vacuum the bottom one day and clean the bowl the next. ich falls to the bottom and reproduces so you need to be able to see it and get it out of there.

you just have one sick little mr betta. bettas come from the store sick and stressed. when they get something it seems like they get things x10. i have a goldfish in my hospital tank now that has swim bladder -- then when i got him out i noticed fin rot AND columnaris. poor lil sick guy.

aquarium water is like a sea of bacteria and parasites waiting for your fish's immune system to drop so they can latch on. there isn't much you can do other than keep your tanks and bowls as clean as possible and be ready for problems.

It could well be ammonia burn instead of fin rot. You don't mention changing his water and 10 days would certainly build up enough ammonia to be a problem. Change his water every other day, medication or not, to prevent the build up of ammonia. Also, it is very difficult to medicate a bowl without over treating the water. Some medications are very harsh and could damage fins at the very least if applied to heavily. I would suggest a small tank for your fish, even just a 2.5 - 5 gallon range would be good.

Change about 50% of his water each day for the next 2 days then change all of it every other day there after. If you medicate, be sure to adjust how much you put in to account for the water changes so you don't get too much in the bowl.

Best of luck!
