Sexual conduct is an intimate issue that doesn't affect the people, so why are some politicians forced to resign after a scandal of this nature?

Their morality shows a lot about their character. Case in point. Gavin Newsom sleeping with his campaign manager and supposedly his "friends" wife. What a scum bag.

This must be a united states issue..right? Luckily in the UK most of our politicians are so boring and ugly that they could'nt get laid if they tried! But seriously though, politicians appeal to the public through their values and integrity, and if they cheat on their spouses this compromises them. Also having an illicit, sordid affair could leave them vulnerable to blackmail or influence.
I shall not be running for the presidency as being soooo physically attractive and dynamic I would get impeached within minutes (sigh!)

It is insane isn't it? This points to the fact Americans came from the puritans and still feel morally obligated to punish anyone of a glorified position for having sex as though it were unheard of. I would much prefer not to know of the sexual antics of politicians than focus on the real and important issues of the day.

It depends on the spin after the fact. Gary Hart had to quit because he had been braggin he was clean and DARED the media to prove otherwise--and they did. Yet Clinton got away with it. I guess some have charisma and some don't.
