Here's an example: user asks a provocative question. Liberal, unable to construct a logical counterargument, flails and goes personal. Why?!

Good question, Willis. The cause of the problem you refer to has multiple causes. As one answerer mentioned, some people have nothing else to do. Some people take any opposing view as a personal attack on their own beliefs. And another problem is that Yahoo users have the luxury of remaining anonymous, if they choose to. I've said this before ... If everyone were required to submit a verified photo, their full name and address, people would not mouth-off, wouldn't use bad language (hopefully), nor resort to personal attacks nearly as much. These are things they'd almost NEVER do in a face-to-face setting, yet it's very commonplace in this anonymous setting.

Good point, Willis. Thanks for asking your question.

because oftentimes that person deserves it, liberal or conservative. When somebody is being really personal, there is not a shortage of people to say so. If you accually look at some of the questions you're referring to, most of them are offensive or worded in a fashion where they will attract flaming. Your question is a perfect example. You apply this only to liberals. that is False, and If I had the time, I could show you hundreds of examples otherwise.

Another thing is broad generalizations like Liberal itself. You classify a lot of people under that label, including me. However, most people here don't post stupid things. only a few. That means that it's a matter of individuals, not groups. keep that in mind.

That's a good question.

I've actually received emails from a few users that were apparently unhappy with my opinions in the political section. A couple of them were apparently foreigners bashing me for being American. Why they felt the need to disagree with my choice of whom I'd like the next president to be when they can't even vote here is beyond me.

It's ridiculous. What's next, bomb threats via email?

How many people these days look at truth objectively? It seems very few. So they attack instead of taking the time to really let a question challenge them.

My philosophy is that if something is true, and it challenges something that I believe, then maybe I need to rethink what I believe.

Always look for the truth, because the truth is from God.

Because extremists (left and right) view the world in polarized stereotypes and when you set them off you trigger the memory of everything else they think "conservatives" or "liberals" are.
They start talking to a mental projection instead of having a conversation. You represent to them the shadow aspect of their own psyche; the part they fear.

Because it's frightening to see the ideologies of people around the world right here in real time. More frightening is seeing terrorist sympathizers living in the UK, USA, Canada, etc.

The mindless hatred towards Americans from allies is frightening because people are kiling us because of that hatred and they are encouraging it.

These ideas, opinions, statements are what lead to bloody conflicts.

Time is personal.

Its just the way people are! Don`t take it personally! Hows your sisters limp? Did you get mad when I said that? I don`t even know your sister but obviously I am making a direspectful insinuation that I had sex with her. Its just a way that people who think they are witty and funny, deal with adult conversation.
