If it was found on private property or property that belongs to a company, it belongs to the property owner--- even if they didn't know the gold was there. You must report it to them only---It would then be up to them as to whether they claimed it and paid taxes on their windfall, or not.

It'd be nice if they gave it to you or shared it with you-- but if you didn't have their permission to go treasure hunting there or even to just be on their property, lots of luck with that!

If found on state or federal lands or public land, the law is more vague, but it has been argued that we the people own both the land and what is found in or on it, so it might have to be sold and the proceeds split between you and the treasurer of your municipality/state, whatever. And then you'd have to claim it and pay taxes on it.

PS--regardless of whether you do any of the above, it is technically illegal to hide income, even that made from lottery or gambling winnings or money made at a garage sale, or money of this sort, so be careful.

You could put a Found notice in the local paper if they look like they were recently lost. Don't mention what they are. Just say Found a tin can with valuables inside. Call ____ to describe and claim.

If they look like they have been there for awhile I think they are yours!
