There are two shields near a converter. The lower one is welded onto the center seem of the converter. the second shield is screwed to the bottom of the floorboards to keep the heat of the floor of your car. One of the other shield is loose most likely the one on the bottom of the converter. The welds commonly break around the shield.

If you hear rattling when the car is off it is probably the exhaust cooling off. It makes a noise like some one is tapping on metal. This is normal. It has to do with the extreme heat generated by your engines exhaust when running. Once you turn your car off the metal starts to contract as it cools making the noise you are hearing.

it's sounds like the catalytic converter heat shields.they rattle when they get old. you can get that fixed and it's usually under $100.

Yes and no, it depend on what kind car you have. Some car can be catalytic converter, and some car can be the middle muffler (that is if you have one).

If I am understandin wut ur sayin right I delt with the same problem with my mother's car...and it turned out that it was just the bracket that held the end of the tail pipe up was loose...so be sure to watch for little things like the muffler/cat. converter hittin up against something(brackets tend to get weak and bend sometimes) and make sure all your brackets, etc. on the exhaust are tightened
