If I wanted to make a shirt with "Give Peace A Chance" on it for example and sell it for profit, would that be legal?

No, it is illegal.
Why sell them, the hippies will call you a capitalist, just give them away.
What make's you think that for every weapon we lay down, the enemy will do the same?
It's actually a beautiful concept man, but impossible to implement.
You could wear it if you want to but the enemy won't understand what you are saying and cut your head off anyway.

No it is not legal because those lyrics are coypwrited. You would have to get permission from the writer or their "estate" in order to do that.

Unless you add the artist, then that would be illegal. If just the words, you will be fine.
