There are so many to choose from. But because I tutor and mentor adolescents, I would have to say If, by Rudyard Kipling (equally applicable to females as well).

For a funny poem, it's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" by Lewis Caroll.

For a serious poem, "Stopping bythe Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost

I have a collection of poems and quotes that I personally like. I could sort out the different poems in catigories and could come up with several favorites.

This is a poem that hangs on our wall along with our marriage license and pictures. I found this poem in an obituary and I don't know the author of it or any of the ones I'm sharing with you.

Take my hand and walk with me,
Across the sands of time;
Hand in hand and heart to heart.
Husband . . . friend of mine.

We will share the solitude.
And walk in quiet peace.
My heart hears what your heart says,
It listens when yours speaks.

We’ve shared hearts and souls as one,
In perfect harmony;
The laughter and the tears we’ve known,
Are the sweetest melody.

For years have brought us to this place.
Across the sands of time;
We’ll walk together, till the end.
Husband . . . friend of mine.

My husband wrote this poem for February, when he belonged to The Literary League of writers. I like it a lot. He wrote it because we are aging together.

Old Valentine’s

Clinging to one another the old couple moves along,
Memories of youth to share.
Their souls intertwined - among the madding throng.

The youth they see remind them of their days of yore,
their locks of gray, the hairless crown,
Oh how their minds do soar.

They see a time when they were young,
they met the test of life,
They hope the young of this age - can hold up to the strife.

Remembering their beauty, that age has swiftly passed,
All that remains, the voice, the smile, their laugh.

The old ones remember times that use to be.
The young move along with mighty song. They cannot really see.

Time takes its toll - then they will know, when they wrinkle and ruffle.
Oh yes, they will know, when it’s their turn to shuffle.

I love this one and use it as a fun poem at family reunions

SUZY LEE

Pappy’S gal Suzy Lee fell in love.
She planned to marry Joe.
She was so happy bout it all,
She told her pappy so.

Pappy told her, “Suzy Gal”
You’ll have to find another.
I’d just as soon yo ma don’t know,
But Joe is yo half brother.

So Suzie forgot about herJoe
And planned to marry Will,
But after telling pappy this
He said “there’s trouble still”.

You can’t marry Will, my gal,
and please don’t tell yo mother,
Cause Will and Joe and several mo
I know is yo half brother.

But Mama knew and said,
“Honey chile, do what makes yo happy.
Marry Will or marry Joe,
You ain’t no kin to pappy!”

This poem gives me a soothing feeling when I think of my mothers death. I found this poem on a head stone in the cemetery

Don’t cry at my grave cause I won’t be there.
I’ll be in the breeze that ruffles your hair,
I’ll be in the sunshine I’ll be in the snow,
I’ll be in the places that we use to go.
I’ll be in your shadow and there in your dreams.
I’ll be in your greetings but not your goodbyes.
I’ll be in the reflection of your loving eyes.
I’ll always be with you and I’ll always care.
Don’t cry at my grave side cause I won’t be there.

My two favorite poems come from the bathroom wall.

Here I sit all broken hearted
I crapped my pants
when I thought I farted.

and

If you love your man
have some class
don't write his name
where you wipe your ***

Truly poetic....hehe
