"Are horses and donkeys of the same species? Use the mule to explain your answer."

One of the criteria for a species is that the offspring are fertile (can breed). A mule is the offspring of a horse and a donkey, but a mule is not fertile so horses and donkeys are different species according to that criterion.

Horses and donkeys are different species within the genus Equus. They have different numbers of chromosomes.

yes they are. a mule is what you get when you mate a horse and a donkey. hope that helps!

because humans are more distantly related to monkeys than horses are to donkeys. In the same way it is possible to inter-breed lions and tigers but not, say, lions and cheetahs or pumas.
