I would be in Melbourne for a week (11 Feb - 16Feb)...and not afford to stay at hotels. Is there any paying guest / sharred accommodation available? What would be the approximate cost?

Search the internet for Backpacker hostels. You can share a room with other people and they're quite cheap.
