Yeah. For example, just look at the lifestyles of the Amish people. I don't think I could live like that unless I really had to, or if I was homeless or flat broke or something. In a materialistic world, it might be hard to adapt to a minimalistic lifestyle, but if it was completely necessary, you do what you gotta do, you know?

Obtain a job with an income that provides only enough for basic survival needs. i.e. Housing, clothing, food, heat, and water.

Throw out everything that has no aesthetic value T.V., radio, news papers, magazines. Read good quality books, learn to meditate, learn to play a simple instrument like the an opened hole flute, tin whistle, bamboo flute, recorder, ocarina, or pan flute. Learn an art like painting, or crafting so eventually you can sell your items and become self-sufficient.

You'll have lots of time to think, and to get in touch who you really are. You'll discover just how much of what we do is actually useless, and you'll learn a lot about what it really takes to survive in this life. It will be a useful, rewarding experiences. It will prepare you for a time in the future when we all may have to live this way.

Yes, one can choose to live this way.
