I have read that some Germans were tortured to get 'confessions',
most notably, the Commandant of Auschwitz.

The Allies wanted to soothe their conscience and point fingers,
after all, we destroyed every major city in Germany and Japan, intentionally targeting the civilian population in massive air raids.
And our Russian friends penchant for rape and brutality...?

Justice most likely took a back-seat at the proceedings.

Not so much for the Tokyo war crimes....many of the accused were spared and some were sponsored by the Us to form the LDP which rules Japan today.

Justice was pacified, in both instances. But probably just about as much as it could be. Too a degree Vengence was served also.
