Zune. Bigger Screen, Radio, Wifi and other cool features.

First of all, there is no cost difference between the 30GB iPod Video and the 30GB Zune. They both cost $250. Unless the store is trying to move their stock on the Zune and has it discounted.

The Zune has FM radio and transmitter, but due to the size and battery-powered aspect, they aren't going to work nearly as well as you'd hope. You'll get spotty reception on the receiver, and you'll have a hard time maintaining a clear frequency if you're driving around using the transmitter. It does have a larger screen, which is a plus. The file-sharing is limited to either one day or three plays, whichever comes first (then the file is deleted), and you'd still need to find another Zune owner to even make use of it (with 90% of the hard-drive player market locked up by iPods, good luck on that one).

The iPod has the device interfact that every other brand tries to emulate, and noone has succeeded in besting them in that regard. It also has the most seamless integration with computer-side software on the market, and iTunes is by far the largest legal download site out there (and your only two options on use of songs downloaded from iTunes are iPods or converting them to the less functional MP3 format). Yes, the screens scratch easily, but this is a known issue, and you can find decent screen guards at pretty much any store that will sell the Video model. You also can't find another compact player with more than 75% of the capacity of the 80GB iPod, and even those are priced to match the cost of the 80GB Video. Also, if you do have a Mac running Mac OS, the Zune is currently not even fully supported with homebrew software, or at all with the bundled software. And accessories are going to be released earlier and in more variety for the iPod family than for the Zune, though the fact that Microsoft is behind it seems to have resulted in the Zune being released with a lot more accessories than better selling non-iPods have available with a longer sales run.

Both players use a better-than-MP3 format and have the option of playing a Lossless format (which are supposed to sound exactly the same as original CD tracks, but use half as much space...which still means they take up over 7x as much space as the standard default 128Kbps bitrate used by both AAC and WMA formats), both will play audio and video formats that the other does not currently support, and both run off a Lithium-Ion battery that's going to die of old age (they begin to corrode internally from the moment they are manufactured, and this will eventually cause them to lose capacity or fail outright)...though with the iPod, you can bet on them having been restocked recently, so your battery hasn't been aging while unused on the store shelf.

I got a black Zune and I love it! Here's why:
1.bigger screen
2.scratch-resistant, durable
3.feels nice in the palm of your hand, really
4.has a nice UI design (way better than ipod)
5.has wi-fi feature so you can send songs & pics to other Zunes
6.has built-in FM tuner
7.you can change the background pic for the whole menu system
8.Zune software has a subscription feature so you can download a lot for 1 price
9.can sync with the Xbox 360
10.you can view videos and some pics in landscape mode (on it’s side) so you just turn it on it’s left side (makes it great for watching videos)
11.you can get 14 day free-trial for Zune Marketplace
12.is something new and has latest technology

Try it yourself! go to Best Buy, and take a look at it, you might like it.

The screen on the ipod scratches easily .. not to mention the battery which only last a few hours. Don't know much about the Zune but people tell me it's much better than the ipod...

Zune. It is just all around more flexible. It has almost everything an iPod has (minus games) and more.

Neither.

Both limit your ability to share music.

Break away from the sheep and at least LOOK at some of the other products on the market.
