I agree with the "they're not rules, just common sense." comment. Also crab, shrimp and lobster are fine to consume while pregnant if fully cooked.
Why chance infection before something heals? Why chance your child having sensitive skin and just use any old detergent? Why risk giving your child something contagious along with that new outfit? Because you're too damn lazy to wash them? Sorry, but my child's safety isn't worth ignoring something I was warned not to do. They put out these "rules" or "guide lines" because of bad outcomes that have happened before- bad enough that they wouldn't want it to happen again. Pure ignorance to me.

I'd be here for days if I ratted myself out on all the rules I've broken.
I did the worst thing a mom can do, apparently. I went with my instincts. To be honest with you, I went through 6 weeks of hell not long after my daughter was born, as she had a stroke when she was 5 days old, and I blamed myself for anything I could think of (they tried to find out what caused it and it was narrowed down to a clottong disorder I passed to her).
Frankly, the most important thing to remember is that we all parent with a combination of conventional wisdom (just like our moms did - formula was the best, and all babies should sleep on their stomachs) and what feels right. It may be wrong tomorrow, but the human race is resillient.
Everybody will make an "oops" from time to time, but we'll survive, and learn from our mistakes.

I never used "baby detergent" to wash my daughter's clothes. I did always wash everything before giving them to her( I worked at a distribution center for Wal-Mart and you would be disgusted at some of the stuff we found in the frieght. Especially clothing!)
But for centuries mothers did things thier own way and everyone came out OK (for the most part!)

LOL... let's see. First of all, most parents are like this!! During pregnancy, I was pretty good but towards the end where I was getting crabby, I had one sip of wine from a glass (even though I hate wine). I always use baby shampoo and soap on my son, but I do use regular detergent (I only used Dreft for the first couple months), I never wash his toys or else I'd have no life. I'd be outside hosing off his toys until sunset every day.
I guess the biggest rule I've broken is letting him get dirty. He's almost 3 and if he wants to play in the dirt, rub food all over himself, get messy, etc.. I let him. Where's the fun in not letting him explore how good speghetti feels on his face? Some parents are too strict when it comes to letting their kids get dirty. In my eyes, their just exploring and learning new things/textures/etc.

I don't use separate detergent for his clothes, that wore off after about a week. It didn't get anything out.
I am a certified pharmacy tech so instead of going to the Dr for every little cough and sneeze, I look into my pharmacology books to find out what he can have and the doses (this is only for cold medicines.)
I gave cereal at 2-3 weeks against Dr's orders, I gave food at 3 months instead of 6-9 months.
This is my first child and I tried to follow the rules and what was told to me, but after the 1st month I got tired and p*ssed at everyone for telling me to do this and do that. So I just started going with my gut. I know whats right for my son for the most part. Oh after a bit I even had a FLAT FLAT feather pillow in his crib.
Good luck.

I am with you girl! I think thinking you have to follow all the rules is a joke. I was so tired of people telling me I was doing things wrong or unsafe.
I have used Q-tips, let them sleep with me, also taken mine in the shower, given them bottles to go to sleep, not washed clothes before they wear them, used regular detergent, etc...
I have three kids and they are all still alive.
I haven't killed any of them yet! (hopefully never will!) :)
I applaud you for following your own instincts. It takes a confident mother to ignore all the advice, even from the docs and specialists.
Thank God we survived with no car seats, sterilization methods, eating regular food, blah blah blah.
Who comes up with some of these rules anyway???

All of them. Not that I consider that there are rules to follow. They are my kids and what we do works. I ate prawns with my last baby, took showers from day one. He only uses the body wash that we all use to wash ourselves. I didn't even know there was baby detergent. Who the hell makes up the rules anyway? I hate people giving me advice about my kids when they don't have any themselves. How the hell would they know?

I totally agree with you....i did all the same things you did except the shower....my daughter hates having water on her head, but loves baths.....i dont know of any rules that I have broken but i am sure there are some.....oh....i know....i gave her a pacifier after it has dropped on the floor without washing it, i dont use the special baby wipes that contain all the scented stuff and she never wears a hat when going outside and i bottle fed her, she didnt spend one instant on my breast....oh oh...i must be a bad mother like you....heheh lol....there are LOTS of great moms out there who dont follow the "rules" and our kids turn out great.....i think most of that stuff is stupid, do what is right for you and you child and dont listen to all the sh*t that is out there

I think a lot of the 'rules' are going overboard.
However, I did stay away from soft cheeses but i have a friend who ate everything when she was pregnant and her children were fine.
We showered my little boy when he still had his cord stub - I just made sure I dried it really well.
I use normal detergent on his clothes but not softener, even though it probably doesn't matter. He doesn't seem to have sensitive skin.
I don't think you are a bad mother because of what you are doing. You aren't endangering him or anything, but I probably would've sterilised his bottles though.
