Intelligent question. Because It is like "chewing the chewed" We have been in this material world for millions of lifetimes. When one comes to the point where their feel bored or disinterested with things, that means they are coming to the end of their material desires and have a chance at liberation. This world is called Maya (illusion ) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here. (us less intelligent ones) We are not these bodies, IE, race , nationality, religion, job, mind, intellect, senses, etc. We are eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, as lo known as Krishna, Allah, Vishnu, Jehovah, etc. We have to reconnect to our Maker to get out of her and return to the eternal supreme Spiritual abode where their is no more repeated birth, death, old age or disease. Go to harekrishnatemple.c for details, read Bhagavad Gita as it is by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada- gives the meaning and purpose to life

i think a lot of it can have to do with society too...think about it, i'm sure it's more like what you said in the usa than say, in china. also, more people these days (in usa type countries anyways) have more choices and the usa is a society of always wanting more, more, more, better, newer, different and not dealing with what you have and improvement of quality. on a personal level, people change over time and like i said about choices, the more choices a person has the more confused, less confident and more wish-washy a person can be, though it's not the case with all things or all people.

I heard a eulogy a long time ago that said - Before your born you know God and you know why you need to come here, God sends you on your way but keeps a tiny piece of your soul, so all the while your here - your incomplete and never satisfied for long - Once your reunited with God, your whole again. It may sound "corny" but to me it answers a lot of questions.

Because no one takes responsibility for their own happiness. Too many people think that someone or something will make them happy and for a while, it does. But when familiarity sets in, they get "unhappy" because they're "bored" so they look for someone/something else. And they continue through this cycle, never realizing that they are the ones responsible for finding their own happiness. No one or nothing will really bring it to you.
