The largest theory why we dream is because our mind during sleep is in a state of nothing. During most of the day we are highly active, at night sleeping there is no stimulation. Visual, ofactory, and even most of auditory are blocked out. At night dreams are really neurons randomly firing that creates stimulation for itself. It is the brain's attempt at making it's own activity since there is no external. There are four stages of sleep, REM (rapid eye movement) where most dream remember occurs. However, we dream all night. The other stages of sleep are simple levels, 4th (gamma waves) being the deepest and least likely to dream. The whole, what your dreams mean, is because your brain is randomly firing whatever it wants. So what may have been on your subconcious during the day lingering, is being fired in your brain. Something that stood out to you as well maybe be brought out in a dream (random neuron firing).

So basically to answer your question, dreaming is the way the brain and keep itself occupied while there is no stimulation going on.

The most honest answer is that we do not yet know the function or functions of dreaming. This ignorance should not be surprising because despite many theories we still do not fully understand the purpose of sleep, nor do we know the functions of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is when most dreaming occurs. And these two biological states are much easier to study scientifically than the somewhat elusive phenomenon of dreaming.

Some scientists take the position that dreaming probably has no function. They feel that sleep, and within it REM sleep, have biological functions and that dreaming is simply an epiphenomenon that is the mental activity that occurs during REM sleep.

This world is a dream, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery. Only one fourth of the souls come here. We are creating our lives by our desires and actions. We get our karma(reactions to previous actions) from our previous lives actions. When we dream at night we are fulfilling desires or acting out fears or so many things that we may not be able to do in our waking dream. It is my understanding that we dream to deal with all of the things currently happening in our lives, for example all of the questions or concerns we have about certain things. It is our way of handling the stresses throughout the day.
