He didn't come across as well.
Her thoughts were locked in cryptic verse.
The message got lost in the process.
You just don't understand.
It didn't compute.
She was screaming against a brick wall.
There was no chemistry.

The Classic metaphor is the cybernetic tradition. Communication is like a computer. The sender hits a key on the keyboard which sends an electrical "message" to the processor that interprets the message and produces the desired result (feedback).
