"The Wall" is from.. hmmm.. 1982... it is a protest song about the education system someplace in Europe.. where they were trying to teach children WHAT to think instead of HOW to think for themselves... more brainwashing than teaching.. I have a copy of it on my mp3 player, and on my USB drive... I always carry it with me.

The Wall was a concept album that follow a musician named Pink that coped with depression, loneliness, abuse, insanity and the struggle to adapt to the world. The song "Another Brick in the Wall" was merely the segment where he describes being abused while at school.

The previous answer is about the song "Mother", not "The Wall"
I actually wrote a paper on "The Wall" (parts 1, 2 and 3 - it is a trilogy, not just one song) for my freshman English class in college... got an A on it.
In a nutshell, "The Wall" is a metaphor for the self-preservation mechanisms that gradually build themselves into our personalities and ways of thinking over time -- based on experiences you have, of course.
You got hurt by a girlfriend? After that experience, you're going to be wary of any future girlfriends who display similar traits to the one who hurt you... therfore, that girlfriend was "another brick in the wall". Your mom was overbearingly protective and constantly reminded you of the dangers awaiting you out there in the world? That fear of what might be lurking down dark alleyways in strange cities sprang from a seed planted by your mother... making her "another brick in the wall". You had a teacher who humiliated you in front of the class by reading your poetry out loud, making you reluctant to share future creations with others? That teacher was "another brick in the wall".
The album "The Wall" as a whole is basically a break down of Roger Waters's bricks in his own personal wall... all the key experiences that made him who he was.
The album "The Wall" was released in December of 1979.

Originally a concept for a concert, where a wall would be built between the band and the audience.
Concerns a rock star (Pink) who is abandoned by his wife, who accuses him of being emotionally detached. Drunk (and high) in his hotel room, he has flashbacks on the events in his life that caused him to become so emotionally insulated.

"The Wall" is a metaphor of his mother sheltering him. Cutting him off from the world for his "own protection". "She wont let you fly but she might let you sing." Meaning that Mother is not going to let you go. "Mother wont let anyone dirty get thru." No women. It's about a mother who is totally controlling. Album came out in the late 70's (like 78). Time frame is in the 40's (WW2) .
