Quite a few traits are influenced by environmental factors. That means that the organism turns out differently than what its genes say.

Example:
1. Genes say a man will be tall, but he didn't get good nutrition when he was a boy, so he is shorter.
2. Genes say a tree will have a straight trunk, but the tree is growing too close to a building.
3. A pregnant woman drinks alcohol, and the fetus is exposed to the alcohol. The baby is born with fetal alcohol syndrome because of the alcohol in its environment.
