I don't think one is "better" than the other -- but I would give Barcelona a slight edge for things to do for teenagers -- it is a much older city than Madrid, is on the seacoast but with nearby mountains, has a new aquarium, amusement park, etc.

But, Madrid, as Hemingway said, is "the most Spanish of Cities"
Barcelona is really a "Catalan" city.

I lived in Spain for two years. If I were you all I would go to both cities. They both have something different to offer. Madrid, is the capital and has a big city (New York) feel. I feel like there are more people in this area that speak English and can help you out if you need it. Although, since it is a BIG tourist attraction that has a lot of American influence, the Madrilenos aren't as helpful as the smaller cities. Barcelona has a lot of architecture that you will not see anywhere else. The architect's name is Gaudi, who died while he was building the La Sagradad Familia (cathedral in Barcelona). The food is different in both areas also.

i would say go to barcelona, no matter what age you are you'll love to see all the Gaudi architecture. you've also got a beach there, which you don't have in madrid. plus, madrid gets pretty hot and stuffy during the summer. though madrid does have a pretty good amusement park... but i wouldn't go there just for that. your mom might prefer madrid, its very classy, but barcelona has a great boho feel.

Barcelona - the streets of Barcelona are alive by day or night, providing the visitor with a safe place for strolling around, whether for shopping, eating or simply passing the time of day. There is also 1 mile long city beach with clean soft sand, ideal for sun bathing. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/barcelona.htm for more details
