Can't they just leave it at the hotel/motel, beachhouse, bungalow, condo, or in their car

i think it's just to show off. they know they can't take care of the phone if actually they want to enjoy a good beach outing. It's true ppl do crazy things.
But there are some ppl who can't live without the phone. specially ppl who've given an office maintained cell phone they are supposed to answer the phone where ever they are. so no option even if they bath in the sea they must take the phone with them.:-)

Some people are like me.. I'm "on call" for a week at a time and I'm required to have my cell phone turned on and on my person at all times during that time. If I get called and do not respond then it is grounds for my dismissal...
But, being "on call" does not mean I cannot go to the beach (but I can't go to the movies or anyplace like that where my phone ringing would disturb a lot of people's paid entertainment).

So they can call their friends and be like "Hey, I am at the beach, you should be at the beach also" and they be like "Sweet, I will come be at the beach with you!"

why do you care, i always carry my phone with me so if i fall off a cliff i can call someone, maybe they have it so they can call their friends?
