x = rural
y = urban
x + y = 221 million people
You are given the fact that 2.25 times x = y, or y = 2.25x.

Substitute the value of y in this equation: y = 2.25x
for the value of y in this equation: x + y = 221.

x + 2.25x = 221
or 1 (x) + 2.25 (x) = 221
or 3.25 x = 221.
Now just divide both sides by 3.25 to get x:

x = 221 / 3.25
x = 68

Since x+y=221, y = 153

Urban = 153
Rural = 68

These are very easy.

Let x = the rural population, and 2.25x equal the urban population.

We know that the two of them together equals 221 million so:
x+2.25x=221,000,000

Simplifying
x + 2.25x = 221000000

Combine like terms: x + 2.25x = 3.25x
3.25x = 221000000

Solving
3.25x = 221000000

Solving for variable 'x'.

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Divide each side by '3.25'.
x = 68000000

Simplifying
x = 68000000

The rural population is 68,000,000 and the urban population is 2.25 times that, or 153,000,000

U(rban) + R(ural) = 221,000,000
U = 2.25R
2.25R + R = 221,000,000
3.25R = 221,000,000
R = 68,000,000
U = 2.25 * 68,000,000
U = 153,000,000
