I dont want to go out with him but i dont want to ruin our friendship?

I need advice badly please help?
I just got asked out by this guy that i like as a friend but nothing more, I told him i was late for the bus and quikly walked away. i dont want to hurt his feeling or ruin our friendship, but i do not want to date him. What should i say

also he asked me to the dance, from my friend she said he already bought the tickets . I really dont want to go to the dance anyways no other people in my grade are going

i know its hard but this happens time and again in every girl or womans life. we need to know how to save the friendship and still get the message across. i know you're just afraid ur going to ruin the friendship. if you really don't want to date him then plz don't! cuz then u'll surely ruin ur friendship. the best thing is to sit down and talk to him. be friendly but firm tell him you love having him as a friend you adore the person he is but you just don't think of him like that and that it won't be fair for either of you if you 'tried' to date him and like him like that. If hes a true friend he will understand and accept and you guys will still be friends.
