We are having the annual debate over an apology for slavery. Me personally, it's not an issue that warrants much time. However, when a politician says that blacks should get over it, shouldn't that apply to everyone? Why celebrate the Confederacy? Honestly, living in a state that celebrates Confederate heritage makes me want some statement to the effect of "While we celebrate Confederate heritage, please don't construe this to mean that we still condone slavery. That was a blemish on our past."
What should we do for everyone to get over that period in our past? I don't advocate forgetting it, just accepting it for what it was and moving on.

Sorry that you live in such a backwards state. You are right, it is over, you had nothing to do with it, neither did I.

There is no doubt that there is a strong racist thread running through much of the "Celebrate the Confederacy" attitude.
However, I accept that there are also those who simply want it accepted, that, for whatever the general cause or however misguided, there were those who fought heroically for a concept of Southern unity and their own version of states and personal rights without the onus of racism, or even the support of slavery - just state's and personal rights.
There were also those who fought fiercely for slavery.
In any case, they fought bravely and died for that in which they believed. Perhaps all that is wanted is the acknowledgment that they fought courageously for a cause and their families and were not cowards???

Southern whites have been a great deal greatly surprised by the Emancipation Proclamation. The emancipation ended following Lee's resign. The slaves have been freed by the thirteenth modification to U.S. shape in 1865.

How can we apologize for what was wrong, wrong, wrong ? A blemish... oh, it was so much more than a blemish !! We can't... we weren't a part of it. I have absolutely no ownership in that. What my whitey white ancestors did was the sign of the times then. Were they ignorant? Probably, yes. , but... intentionally... don't think so... it was just that era that bred ignorance about human relations and equality. . .. This was an era that perceived blacks to be only 3/5th human... and that thought carried into the 60's in Mississippi !!!.. We should pull on the big girl panties/ big boy boxers and admit .... HELL YES... slavery was wrong. !! Embrace the color of person next to you !! Does it matter if he is black, white, brown , yellow. green. pinlk??? NOOO ! What matters is his integrity , his dignity, his worth as a person !!!

What state do you live in? I live in Georgia and we, admittedly, have our share of the "south will rise again" idiots, but that represents a very small minority. The majority of people are not like that and do not celebrate anything having to do with the confederacy.

Blacks should get over slavery because it never happened to them. If someone acts racist toward YOU then you have a valid complaint, but you can't complain about something that never happened to you. As far as an apology goes, nobody who owes an apology is still alive and nobody who deserves to receive an apology is still alive , so that's the end of that. I am responsible for I've done in my life but I don't need to feel guilty about what other people did in the past.
