i need help with Equations with trinomial squares
problems like

(x-5)squared = 49

the answer to this is 12,-2 but i don't understand how my book arrived at that. plz explain

also this too:
(x+3)squared = 100

and:
(x-1)squared =73.5

First you need to factor the equation right then solve for X. You will have two answers because X is to the second power. (hense, if it is to the third power there would be three answers and so on.)

(x-5)^2=49
(x-5)(x-5)=49
x^2-10x+25=49 (You must set the equation to 0 to solve)
x^2-10x-24=0
(x-12)(x+2)=0
Solution= x=12 or x= (-2)

Just solve the other two the same way as the first one and you will be set.

Looks like you'd do this by taking the square root of each side.
Be careful, there's a plus and minus square root.
For example,
(x-5)^2 = 49
x - 5 = + 7 or - 7
x-5 = 7 or x - 5 = -7
add 5 to each side in each of the above...
x = 12 or x = -2
The next one,
x+3 squared = 100
x + 3 = plus or minus 10
x+3 = 10 or x +3 = -10
subtract 3...
x = 7 or x = -13
The next one
x-1 squared = 73.5
x - 1 = plus or minus square root of 73.5
x = 1 + square root of 73.5 or 1 - squre root of 73.5
This last one is a little different as all the others had a number with a nice rational number as a squre root on the right hand side. But they'd all work like this.

yay..i know how to do these problems.
(x-5)squared=49 this sign ^means to the power of
x^2 + 25=49
x^2 +25-25=49-25
x^2= 24
then divide and you can divide with those 2 numbers...12, and -2

u can figure the rest out on your own..

(x-5)^2 = 49 // you need to take the square root of both sides

x-5 = 7
..+5..+5

x=12

x-5=(-7) // Remember it could be positive or negative to be 49
..+5...+5
x = (-2)
