I don't think either team is making or breaking it with Clemens this year. The Bosox have their team pretty much togther pending a last minute trade for Helton and so do the Yankees. If Clemens wants to pitch I think both teams would accomodate him. WIll it make either team a winner?, it could down the stretch but both teams have better had good seasons for Roger to matter much.

Baseball is a team sport and no one is bigger than the game. He makes a lot of money playing a kids game so if he wants to play he should be treated like any other player. It's not like he has been an every day player. An entire season who be somewhere between 35-40 starts. And that's probably a little high. If I was either team and really wanted him to pitch I would make the best possible offer now and expect an answer by Feb.15th when pitchers and catchers are due to report. If that's not good enough then I'd look else where. Clemens is a lock for the hall of fame and he probably is better than a majority of major league pitchers but he's no longer in his prime regardless of what people may think and can only influence 35 to 40 games during the season. As I said, it's a team sport and whether he plays or not will not hold up the season for either the Red Sox or the Yankees.

If it was Babe Ruth how long would you wait? Or how about if it was Pete Rose?
You don't rush Roger Clemens, he doesn't HAVE to come back. He can retire. He knows he's getting old. He knows that his body probably can't hold up for a full-season anymore.
He is also at a point where any day could be the last day of his career. One big injury and it's over for good whether he wants to be done or not.
This is why he is trying to decide where to pitch all three cities are special to him for different reasons and anyone in his situation would struggle to make the same decision.
The fact of the matter is this...when you're the greatest pitcher of all-time, people will wait for you. Both the Sox and Yankees have rotations that can survive with Clemens for half a season if that's the case...the Astros don't.
Sure some of it is for money and ego and attention, but he's still the best pitcher in the game. If he doesn't want to come back until August...fine. It's not like any of the three teams should be planning for 2007 with Clemens...if they are, that's awful team management. That would have been like the Royals coming into the offseason planning to bring in Soriano, Lee and Zito. You have to go with what your team has available...not pie in the sky dreams.
You wait as long as you have to. It's not like you're paying him to think about it...

Roger Clemens does not want to pitch for the Red Sox or the Yankees. If he pitches anywhere, it will be in Houston. All that talk about his going to the Yankees to be with his buddy Andy or finishing in Boston where he started is just foolishness. He did the same thing last year when he talked with the Rangers before signing with the Astros. He is playing whoever shows interest in him to drive up his price with the Astros. He has the Astros trained like a puppy.

BUT, Roger Clemens IS dumb. What do you expect from the king of drama? He will get the attention for as long as there are idiots out there who still think he can pitch and who are willing to sign him. Roger's loyalty is to Roger and Roger alone. He makes a joke and asses out of baseball administrators who give in to his demands such as not traveling with the team and reporting for duty half way through the season. The Yankees can have him. No self-respecting member of Red Sox Nation would want anything to do with such a self-serving individual.
Chow!!

lf you're Boston, you don't wait. He has already broken off talks with the Red Sox, so you must assume he will not pitch for them. Clemens has stated that he would only like to pitch for a contender. Since the Yankees are perennial contenders, AND they certainly can afford him, he will probably sign with them, but he most likely will only pitch part of the season. Since he also is not a fan of spring training, look for him to sign after the regular season starts and report to the Yankees sometime around Memorial Day.

I'm from Houston. It's not attention. It's the most money he can get from a contending team. It may be worth the wait. Look at his numbers for the past two years. Unfortunately the Astros bats froze every time he pitched and for what ever reason that happened it's not worth the investment. I guarantee he is a better option than either teams 5th starter.

For last year and this one, it's obvious he doesn't want to pitch a full season. He feels he has 1/2 a season of quality pitching in him.
Both teams are playoff contenders. Both teams will pay top dollar ON HIS TIMETABLE for 2 reasons.
1. His pitching presumably will win games.
and
2. It's that much worse if the other team gets him.
As messed up as it seems, he has all the cards here.

As long as it takes- cheaper and has proved he can come in late and really help down the wire and he can wait and make sure he picks the team going to the play-offs-my guess is the Yanks with Pettite there now.
EVERY team would wait on this guy.
