For thousands of years, wars have been fought over land, power, glory. But then there were also wars fought because of foolhardy actions by crazy leaders. In more recent times war has become a political tool and for several rational, but not necessarily agreeable, reasons.

1. War is generally good for the economy, or at least big business. The best example of this is the U.S. economic growth as a result of WWII military production.
2. War also serves to mobilize public support for an administration and to distract the public from their more pressing problems that such an administration is uncapable or unwilling to solve.
3. War makes the public happy and thrilled, as long as they are not personally involved in any of the fighting or it starts to cost them too much as taxpayers.

In other words, wars involving what are considered "first-world countries" no longer serve materialistic purposes such as conquest of territory. Rather, war has become propaganda. Even when such nations send troops for "humanitarian" purposes such as helping resolve conflicts in Africa, it is only for propaganda reasons. Sadly, first-world nations stand by and watch as genocide occurs throughout the world, from Africa to Eastern Europe to Cambodia (Kampuchea).

The real problem is not that the governments themselves are to blame, but the public is largely responsible for this inaction. That means you too. Apathy is a terrible thing. Even if we as citizens care, the overwhelming majority do not have the inclination to go and do something.

While an overwhelming majority of the world's population writhes in the pain of poverty, disease, and violence. The world's affluent sit on their lounge chair, watch TV, learn about a few more hundred deaths in Iraq, eat some chocolate, and the go online to read (or write) this.

There are good and bad reasons for going too war. Since the bad are too numerous to fit into the dictionary, I will name the good reasons.
1) stopping of slavery (yours or someone elses)
2) Defend oneself. (country state)
3) stopping expansion of an evil government or government type.
4) Stop the annailation of a country, creed, religion, or color. (differences only)
5) Rights given by our creator.
If we do not fight for our own defense. There are many who would come in rape our women kill anybody they deemed worthy to be killed. And steal our lands and steal our resources. Look at the rape of Nanking in China by the Japanese in WWII.
These are not all the reasons. Just a few.

There is no one reason for war. Land disputes, feelings of injustice, even the death of pigs have been reasons for war. War is truly a tool that must not be abused.

War is the failure of diplomacy. Just like kids, once communication brakes down all you can do is hit or call names.

i think the basis of war is to satisfy the desire of those who initiate it... be it for show of power, money, technology, strength, ethnic cleansing or just plain brutality. ppl will always come up with 'noble' reasons to justify their stand to go to war

There is no purpose. Can't we all just get along? But to Republicans, it's to make them look important and all-knowing...but I won't get into that.
