It's interesting to see the difference in answers to this question. The American involvement in Vietnam began in 1947, when the U.S. "subsidized" French military action against the North in 1947. That involvement lasted nearly 28 years, until the North defeated the South, and unified the country in April of 1975.

Darchangel_3 is correct. The U.S. sent advisors to Vietnam in 1954 to help the French fight to keep Vietnam as a colony. The French quit as usual and took off leaving us to pick up the pieces. If the French had not gone back to re-assert their colonial authority after the British and U.S. kicked the Japanese out of Indochina in WWII our involvement in that war my have never happened.

Way beyond the official story at the very least.. USA had advisors & troops in Nam during the korean conflict mid 50's to mid/ late 70's at least ... and thats public record knowledge.. 21 years at least in even our own US official records... (some records put us there(ours) as early as 1954
