Most computers are initially set up to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. You CAN, however, change the order in which the drives boot through the BIOS (make sure that CD/DVD is before the hard drive). There are a few different varieties of BIOS that i have dealt with, so i can't speak specifically about how yours works.

Nothing is going to be accomplished by just booting into from the CD/DVD drive unless you have a disk (ie a Windows XP disc) to boot from. It should say "Press any key to boot from disc..." or something like that. After it boots you can correct whatever problems there is or make the changes you want.

On a different note, there are a lot of bootable discs from various linux distros if that floats your boat.

rapid question, are you doing this interior abode windows? if so, you may no longer format c: from the DOS prompt in abode windows. Get a CD or floppy with the needed archives as nicely from it and run the command application. a stable application you may receive is called ultimatebootcd, which has numerous utilities to handle HD formatting. additionally, if your laptop is new it would use SATA HD, so if your BIOS does not grant help for SATA you will no longer have the potential to make sure it using easy boot CD's. you will choose for the SATA drivers to accomplish that. one way is to apply the abode windows installation and press F6 to function further drivers (abode windows XP) then format the HD. might desire to be lacking some factors, yet a minimum of is a initiate.

why don't you just get an external CD rom for it...? They're cheap. Must be pretty old if it doesn't have a CD - be careful what you put on it.
