one that I can think of is hit your local (city/county) government to see if the number of building permits (for new houses) has increased or decreased in the past couple of months.
Permit issues has ~ a 9 month lead as an indicator for housing.
I'm not sure if how much info they'd be willing to give up, but check your local Home Depot, Lowes or other Home Improvement store. If they are selling lots of Pre-fabed trusses (the roofing frames) then that is going to be a more immediate indicator (2-3 month lead in in the housing market).

the biggest one is the federal reserve rate. this basically determines what the interest rate is going to be. a high interest rate usually slows down the housing market. another one is consumer confidence. if people feel good about their jobs and the economy, they are much more likely to buy a house.
