1. (1/2)(2x + 6^2)

First: Use PEMDAS --- ( ), exponents, multiplitcation, division, addition & subtraction.

(1/2)(2x+6*6)
(1/2)(2x+36)

Sec: eliminate parenthesis - distribute the outer term with the terms in parenthesis...

(1/2)(2x)+(1/2)(36)
(2x/2)+(36/2)
= x + 18

2. (1/2)[(2x+6)^2]

First: use PEMDAS...

(1/2)[(2x+6)(2x+6)]

(1/2)[(2x*2x)+(2x*6)+(6*2x)+(6*6)]

(1/2)(4x^2+12x+12x+36)

(1/2)(4x^2+24x+36)

Sec: distribute the outer term with terms in parenthesis...

(1/2)(4x^2)+(1/2)(24x)+(1/2)(36)
(4x^2/2)+(24x/2)+(36/2)
= 2x^2 + 12x + 18
