After taking a sociology class last semester, I learned alot about poor people. Contrary to what many people think, we not a democracy anymore but plutocracy, a government concerned about the rich people. We have a president who cuts taxes of the rich, who can AFFORD to pay their taxes, raising the taxes of the middle and lower classes, causing more people to become poor.
Our country sets a annual salary at a certain amount of money and if you are below that, then you are considered poor. The salaries are set at minimum wage and are ridiculous, causing more people to become categorized as "poor". If i can recall correctly, if a family for four is making at least $14000 a year, they more not considered poor, and are THEREFORE not given the benefits and help that the classified poors are given even though they need it.
It's unfortunate that our country voted for a man who is spending money to kill others for their oil, and yet had a man hanged who killed people in his country. how ironic. He's killing members of our troops everyday so he can benefit from their oil, so why isnt he being hanged? That's why we need someone like Bill Clinton back in office because he did alot for the poor, the enviornment, and he put $60 trillion in our country.

There are very true poor people in this great country of ours. In other countries there truly are poor people, they don't have electricity Cable TV Cadillacs computers, video games and the like. The US sends these countries billions more in aid each year than they spend on the war in Iraq so we have money enough for both.

If you haven't noticed, THIS is a capitalist society. We have laws requiring that ever child -- until the age of 16, be educated. We have taxes up the wazoo to fund public education. If you have half a brain, you will gladly attend that public school, pay attention, do well and then find the funding to get yourself through a four year college. Having done that, you can then get a relatively well paying job working for someone else, or roll the dice and start your own business. For those who were too busy worrying about what so-and-so was wearing, or from where they were going to get their next buzz on, there are minimum wage jobs -- which is all you would be capable of getting and maintaining. Sadly, there are so many who repeatedly make the wrong decisions in life and then expect the rest of us to pay their way, that we owe them something -- welfare, etc.. To them I say, life has consequences.
And, it's not that we have money for war, we have money to maintain a military to protect our national interests. Perhaps if you studied a little history or political science, you could gain a greater understanding and appreciation for what we provide.

We are the poor; we are borrowing the money from China for the war!
I think we do not feed the poor because politicians feel that they can get their own jobs and the poor basically choose to be poor; of course children and mentally ill and chronically ill don't really have a choice in the matter, but they may not be thinking of those individuals. I also think that the majority of politicians making these kind of decisions are millionaires or close, and have had privileged lives themselves, haven't grown up poor and/or hungry, so don't have much empathy/sympathy for the poor, or understanding of what it is like to be poor or starving.
I was talking one time to one of my dh's law school friends explaining how my dh had been basically abused at his summer job stocking groceries, given absolutely no breaks, 80 hour workweek, etc. but we needed the job, I was pregnant, etc. and he was all you should have complained that's against the law, etc! He had no conception of what it is really like to need a job and not risk firing! Another clueless rich white guy like most of these politicians...

We can - and do 'feed the poor.'
What has happened is that we have forgotten the concept that the purpose of a subsidy is to increase the quantity of something.
Since we have chosen to subsidize poverty - it should be expected that poverty would increase.

I think it's because to the people in charge, they have
become invisible.
Where I live, people working 2 jobs at $8./hr. can barely
afford rent, much less utilities, insurance or food.
Oprah did an experiment on this, all it took was one
unforeseen illness & they had to back out the experiment.
It's a disgrace & what it says about our society is shameful.

We have system in place to feed our people. I am sure if I need it, I will get food stamps in the form of a credit card.
So, instead swipe a VISA card, I swipe my food stamp "instrument" in the supermarket checkouts.

Look around at SOME of the so called poor. They are plain lazy illiterate looking for a free handout. They cost this country millions of dollars every year in free handouts, food stamps, unemployment ect. Ever notice how free loaders are fat? no starvation there. They take away from the ones that realy need it.
