One of the most significant differences between east and west is the way "the importance" of man is expressed. In eastern art, man is a realistic part of the scheme of nature. In western art, man is usually portrayed as apart or above or more important than nature. Here is a good article about nature and Japanese art:

there are too many differences to name. their origins, the styles they've gone through, etc. one would have to study both, and my area of study thus far is mainly western art.
