i want a hedgehog really bad (weird i know) but i heard they are illigal in California. i do'nt know why they're illigal but what can i do? can someone help me?

I honestly don't think that there is any reason that they would be illegal. And no, it's not weird, they're rather cute lil buggers!! I think continue with your plans of getting your little friend, and so long as you don't walk him with a leash and harness around the block, you should be fine ^_^ Good Luck!!

Yes they are illegal in California mainly because so much of the state is devoted to agricultural and those corporate farms have powerful lobbyists to push through laws--they don't want those stupid people who think setting a pet free in the wild is a good thing releasing, even by accident, hedgies who'd breed and munch through all those vegetables California grows and sells. However, if you should somehow travel to someplace that allows hedgehogs and happen to bring one into California "accidentally" without telling the authorities and without ever letting it loose outside, you can keep your hedgie as a secret. Most vets will treat them--but maybe it's a good idea to ask your local vet now if they know and would treat hedgehogs if, for some reason, someone ever brought one in to the clinic. A right-minded hedgie breeder probably wouldn't ship to California because if they discovered a hedge hog being shipped, the breeder could get into trouble.

Your hedgehog's intentions may be honorable, but Californians have reason to look askance at just letting "anyone" in. The region's common raccoon, for instance, is descended from a single pair transported from the East Coast during settler times.
