The function of the mammary glands in female breasts is to nurture the young by producing milk, which is secreted by the nipples during lactation. While the mammary glands that produce milk are present in the male, they normally remain undeveloped. The orb-like shape of breasts may help limit heat loss, as a fairly high temperature is required for the production of milk. During lactation, the energy consumption of the breast exceeds that of the brain, otherwise by far the body’s most energy-hungry organ. Alternatively, the human breast evolved in order to prevent infants from suffocating while feeding. Since human infants do not have a protruding jaw like human evolutionary ancestors and other primates, the infant’s nose might be blocked by a flat female chest while feeding. According to this theory, as the human jaw receded, the breasts became larger to compensate.

been brought up before. All mammals have them, yes, but they don't amount to much more than bumps on virtually all species except humans when they aren't being about or in active use nursing young. The fact that human females have them (in various sizes) even when they are not, is a clear example of secondary sexual dimorphism (an adornment, if you will) designed or evolved (take your pick) to attract potential mates. Same with conspiciously rounded buttocks, etc.

This is (to me, anyway), all the more interesting, because of the fact that in virtually ALL other species, the male is the one sporting otherwise useless, decorative physical features that serve the same purpose - the bag under a frigatebird's neck, a Peacock's tail feathers, a lion's mane, etc. Hell, The bower bird even has to build a fancy little house to get some "tail." So hey, don't complain.

I don't buy the receeding jaw requiring protrusion
argument. Even flat chested women are not flat chested when they are nursing. And everybody knows women with little or no fulltime boobs that have successfully nursed their young.

For feeding your baby ... and to Jay ... you have nipples because you were once a girl ... the default position for most mammals is female and it is only in the 7/8 week of pregnancy that you became a boy !!!

Because babies are not born with an "Evenflow" baby bottle clenched tightly in one little fist. What kind of dopey question is this?
