How do I go about telling my employer I am unhappy with my year end bonus after all the extra responsibility he gave me during the year. My bonus was the exact same as the previous year but my workload tripled.

A bonus is just that a bonus. I would concentrate more on your increased workload and ask for a raise. This will give you a higher level of compensation.

Honesty is the best policy in this situation. Make an appointment to talk to your employer. Explain to him that you feel that you are entitled to a more generous year end bonus, as your workload tripled. He may tell you that it is company policy to only give a standardized bonus, and that will be your answer.

If your workload has increased substantially, and your wage has not increased, you may want to discuss that aspect of your employment also. It is better to be forthright and honest, than silently seething about something which may have a more satisfactory solution. Good luck to you and have a good night.

Request a private meeting with your manager and ask why it didn't increase. Don't be confrontational and put them on the defensive right away. Give them a chance to explain their side first. It could be that company profits were down and other people got less bonus than the prior year.

Tell him/her bluntly in a memo.
