Yes - you can have a dorm room all to yourself - but they can be expensive.
Good Luck!!!

For the most part if you're a freshman/first year student you will be housed in a typical dorm. That probably means roommate.
However the school you attend has a lot to do with your options. Some school will let you commute if you leave really close. So you can tell them you live with your parents down the street and then just get an apartment.
There are other school (Columbia College Chicago for example) where they don't actually have "dorms".The school bought a number of lofts and apartment building in downtown Chicago and turned them into living quarters. Although, most of them are double or even quad rooms and suites they aren't your typical dorm. They're apartments with full kitchens and living rooms.
Your living situation will be very subjective. There are opportunities for some students to "buy out" the other half of their room. Essentially you are paying double the room and board for a single room. But what's almost the same at every college is that if you apply to become an RA (resident assistant) you usually get your own room and the school pays the room and board.
but if you're a first year you may have to suck up a semester or two of a roommate. But don't discredit it. Half the fun of college is either having the roommate who becomes your best friend or the rooommate from hell that you never forget and becomes one of the most memorable parts of college life.

Actually you can get a room to yourself. I go to Umass Dartmouth and they have single rooms for freshman. Of course its a lot more expensive than sharing a room with one or more people. You also have to remember that school in the city have limited space; so you may not have the option of having a room to yourself or even if they have space they require you to share a room as a way for you to interact with new people. By the way the if you do get a single room it will probably be the size of a shoe box.

I think as a freshman, you don't get a choice, but in the 2nd semester of my freshman year, my roommate left and never came back, so I got a single, but I had to pay more.
It really depends on the school. Call and ask.
You can also, usually, get some off of your room and board if you take an extra roommate.

If you are handicap, you can get a dorm all for yourself. You can also get your own dorm if you are an advisor for the floor. Other than that, I don't know of any University that gives single dorms.

No, almost all schools require freshman (and sometimes sophomores and juniors) to have roommates. And many won't let you live off campus until your senior year.

I know Berkeley has singles. They exist. Just not sure if any exist for freshmen (except for, possibly, the handicapped).
