changing gear oil in rear differential of a rear wheel drive auto.
not commonly refered to as a flush though. only time a flush would be required is if containation got inside differential which is very uncommon. the change frequency will depend on weather sythetic gear oil is used. 100K for synthetic 75K for non synthetic.
the same is true for manual transmissions that use gear oil. manual transmissions that use transmission fluid (such as Ford Rangers) require fluid change at 60K.

I've been an auto tech for 11 years and never heard of an axle flush. a transaxle flush or tranny flush is where a shop hooks a machine to you tranny and force fluid through you trannsmission. I can tell you from experience this machine can cause more bad than good. the best way to care for your trans is if it is a automtic drop the pan and change the filter and then refill the trans with new fluid. if it's a stick its even easier just drain and refill. how often you just have to go by your cars maintenance schedule which is in your owners manual.

There is not really "an axle flush", If it has a removeable cover on the diiferential, they take it off, drain the fluid & clean the housing. Put the cover back on & refill it with fluid. If the cover is not removeable they drain & refill the housing. A good rule of thumb is to change all of your fluids every 30,000 miles(fuel filter too)

it is like an oil change for your axle but it is trick to do with out the machine this is recommended every 12k to 15k miles to prevent abnormal wear to the gears they also use a conditioner for the fluid to operate under higher stress i do recommend this
