Off Hair Dye Outcome?

My hair is naturally a dirty blondeish color, and I've recnetly started to dye my hair every few months. All the dyes look right on the box, but both blonde and brunette dyes alike seem red on me.

What medium-brown dyes are there that won't make my hair red?

What ingredient in the dye makes blonde and brown dyes look red?
