I must pay for X percent of the cost, or X percent of the job requires me to travel, or what? Also, in your experience how does the job description match how much traveling you actually had to do? Thanks in advance.

This question during the hiring process is just to sort out those who have no problem being away from home X amount of time. Some people love travelling for business while others barely want to travel across town.

You might also ask about how their travel policies work. For example, do you pay for everything up front yourself and then get reimbursed, or are airline tickets paid by the company upfront and then you get reimbursed for the rest, etc. This might have a bearing on whether you want to travel for this company or not.

Additionally, you might ask some other folks at the company about those "unwritten" travel rules, such as what kind of things you can expense (dry cleaning? Starbucks when travelling? a $50 bottle of wine, etc.).

The job descriptions that I've had have usually pretty closely mirrored the actual amount of travel.

it tells you how much traveling you would have to do on that job. for example, an ad that says willing to travel 40% would mean 2 days out of 5 would be on the road.

Usually its more than they say but if you want the work bad enough you will make the adjustment in your life.
