I just got a new tank (my first in a few years). I don't want to use gravel, so I was thinking of weighing down my fake plants with pennies...would that be safe?

Although the newer pennies contains very little copper. I would advise you not to use pennies in your fish tank. Copper is poisonous to all fish and invertibrates, and is almost impossible to remove from a tank once it gets introduced. It will kill your fish.

I don't think that that is a very good idea. Fish do not do well with metals of anysort in the water. Some medications are water-based though, so It could just be that copper is fine.
If you do decide to do it, then I suggest cleaning it off really well, but take special care not to leave any soap on the penny at all, this will be more toxic to the fish than the penny may be.
Introduce the penny into the tank slowly and see how the fish react to it. Leave about half off the penny submerged for a few days. If the fish show no reaction, add the whole thing.

I don't think that will be a good idea. Fish are very delicate animals. Too much copper or metal in the water might affect them. Also they really do need gravel, they need to feel like they are in a familar environment. Go to craigslist and find some people selling or giving away fish stuff. Also if its freshwater tank, real plants are much better for the fish.

YOU could but then you find out how quickly pennies rust. THe pennies product now, only have a very thin copper coat....so the end result wouldn't be all that great for your fish.

pennies do not reduse parasites...

pennies will kill your fish...

metals in general are bad for fishtanks, as they throw off the nitrate/nitrite cycle

the zinc in pennies withh cause your fish to get sick by screwing with their senses...the electrolites in the zinc in the pennies will throw off the fishes equaliberum through its lateral line, causing them to run into the walls of the tank, lose their appetite, and eventually die...

i suggest not putting pennies in your tank if you value the lives of your little finned friends.

Pennies are not dangerous to fish but the bacteria from hand to hand to hand is very harmful to fish and could cause and unhealthy spread in the fish tank... Good luck with your tank!

Absolutely not!
The metals will poison the water and eventually cause the fish to die a slow death.

Yes...As long as it is NOT a salt water tank. In fresh water, the pennies my actually help reduse parisites due to the slight residual copper. Good luck, jason
